Malcolm Burkett

Hayle Academy was founded in 2007 by Malcolm, realising his long held ambition of offering excellent education and sporting opportunities in West Cornwall.

Malcolm was the British Schools Judo Association Kent girls coach for 15 years, and in that time the team were always in medal winning positions. Malcolm has also instructed many young players that have gone on to national and international status. He was awarded the National Schools Coach of the Year accolade in 2000 for his achievements.

He now leads a team of judo coaches, including his son Vincent and his daughter Sarah, in 28 schools across 4 counties of Southern England. Vincent represented Kent County whilst Sarah also represented the Southern area of England and trained with the national team. In 2003 Sarah was awarded national schools coach of the year.

Malcolm has held a lifelong passion to start a school where judo is the mainline sport. “It has a lot to offer not just as a sport but also a learning process, for life itself.”
